My Journey to Motherhood

2021 seems to be the year of boys. I've seen endless pregnancy announcements on social media where most of the baby's genders were boys - perhaps I have the Instagram algorithm to blame, after all, I am heavily consuming pregnancy content online and we all know how the algorithm works.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm here to add to this (non-existent) ever-growing online list of boy moms! Being pregnant and three weeks into my official role as a mother - I've learnt quite a lot. Seeing as I'm on maternity leave, I thought it the perfect opportunity to share my thoughts on Pregnancy, the birth experience and being a mother.

No doubt there have been plenty of mom bloggers before me and there will be plenty of mom bloggers after me, but I strongly believe I have some valuable insights and knowledge to share, especially for women who are wondering what it's like to be in your early twenties with the huge responsibility of bringing life into this world.

THE PREGNANCY
I kept my pregnancy on the down-low because I was going through so much. There were some moments where I felt like I could've been celebrating this amazing journey more and some days where I tried, by all means, to do so. Intertwined in the midst of this wonderful news of my pregnancy was grief from the recent loss of my father, fluctuating hormonal levels which sometimes left me depressed and the miserable season that is winter.

Despite what I was going through, I was able to enjoy and embrace moments of joy which were the first kicks Mathéo gave me, the constant kicks and movements thereafter, thoughts of what life would be like when he was finally here and the cute, tiny baby clothes I imagined him in.

There were definitely a lot of things I learnt throughout my pregnancy, the biggest one being not to internalise other women's experiences. Pregnancy is unique to each and every woman. Where one may experience constant nausea, aversions etc another may have a graceful time, unbothered by any of that. That was my experience - but we'll delve deeper into that in another blog post.

THE BABY
For every first-time mom, motherhood is an unknown. You may have (again) heard various experiences of raising children, the newborn stage and whatever else you were told, but you may still not know what it'll have in store for you. Much like each woman's pregnancy is different, each child is different too. You can give birth to the calmest little angel or a fussy little cupcake. The bottom line: your experience may never be the same as Katherine, your colleague's. So learn to embrace this experience wholeheartedly and be open to the unexpected.

Regardless of the above, watching your baby grow and learn new things is a feeling like no other which I am sure is something each mother can attest to.

BLOG MOM CONTENT
I'm really excited to pen down bottled up thoughts about my pregnancy journey as well as my current experience as a mom. Be prepared for various content ranging from what pregnancy was actually like to my experience as a mother and helpful tips and tricks here and there. So, stay tuned for that weekly #MomBlogger content I'll be putting out.
